action 7: garden scrolls
the seventh in a suite of environmentally responsive actions undertaken at Redleaf beach in Sydney's east over the course of a 4 month residency
Antique perforated scroll from a player piano, Japanese watercolour pigments, violets from the Blackburn gardens.
A garden drawing to be in relationship with the garden drawings of other artists from The Little Umbrella Collective at the 2024 Woollahra residency. Took the shadow drawings from Work 3, moving the scroll from the beach to the garden - thus responding to not only the beach studio elements but the environment of the Blackburn Gardens.
Thread the violets into the perforations of the scroll and include them in the gold strokes made onto the paper. This was departing from the metallic pastel markings from Work 2, overworking the same scroll. Artists worked with wind, holding the brush with the metallic pigment and allowing the paper to blow up towards the brush, allowing it to do the mark making.
