tidal boundaries
action 2: shadow tracing
action 2: shadow tracing
the second in a suite of environmentally responsive actions undertaken at Redleaf beach in Sydney's east over the course of a 4 month residency
Surface and mark-making materials - perforated piano roll scroll, including endemic text printed on the original roll), metallic pastels.
Natural elements - Sun shadows, moving over time
The fence that divides 7 Shillings Beach into 2 sections, one nominally private and one public, runs almost directly North to South, meaning that it acts as a kind of sundial, casting distinct shadows onto the sand as the sun moves east to west over the day. After midday, the shadows fall on the ‘private’ side, meaning that this drawing was done in a patch of beach that falls within the title of Fairview, the mansion to the east of Woollahra Gallery. The current owner of Fairview is one of the richest people in Australia.
Two artists are positioned on either side of the breach in the fence, with one artist drawing underneath the fence, from public into private land.
The tide is high, and the unrolling of the piano roll scroll is determined by the position in relation to the tide edge.
Metallic pastel is used to directly trace the lines of shadow. Correspondences are noted with randomly positioned lines of text on the Piano Roll itself.
