Bird in hand, 2020-ongoing, is an artistic response to species loss through the medium of collage.
Every one of the hundreds of birds that has been cut out of a vintage book and used in this project is a finite resource drawn from the golden age of printed nature books. By pasting these works up on urban walls and allowing for original artworks to weather and disappear, the artist draws attention to the fact that these resources, like the birds themselves, are finite.
Beginning during lockdown in 2020 as a means to provide delight to isolated people taking their few permissable walks a day, bird in hand developed into an international mail art project, and eventually took the form of a suite of works exhibited at the Redleaf Gallery in Woollahra, including this chiffon piece which 'returned' disappeared local birds to the environs of the gallery.
