tidal boundaries

action 3: fence rubbing; action 4: fence printing

action 5: driftwood; action 6: windwork

action 3: fence rubbing

method/practice/medium: Handmade embossed and pliable paper, metallic pastels, breach in fence

process/score: Very pliable embossed paper is pegged over the breach in the fence. Metallic pastels are used by two artists to reveal the edges of the breach in the fence by feeling and drawing the obscured chainlink. The artists swap sides so that the marks and colours of both metallic pastels are shown on the left and right sides of the revealed form.

action 4: printing

method/practice/medium: Japanese ink pad, fence, paper

process/score: An ink pad is applied to the fence at the edges of the hole. Paper is printed by pressing it directly onto the fence.

action 5: driftwood

method/practice/medium: Driftwood from the beach, metallic pigments

process/score: Delivered by the waves next to the fence by chance, a large fire-blackened slab of driftwood enters the sequence

action 6: windwork

method/practice/medium: Bubble mixture, fence, wind, performance

process/score: Use the breach in the fence to create a boundary that is as ephemeral as possible. It was prompted by the fence’s position, North-South: the wind coming off the ocean runs straight through the fence. Wind has had a strong presence in this suite of works and in the studio, and is here made the main constituent element.
